OBJECTIVE

The Smart K9 (K9HERO) project aims to enhance the effectiveness of Search and Rescue (SAR) operations by improving the genetic and phenotypic traits of SAR dogs (K9s) through advanced genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and cutting-edge wearable technology.
By integrating

  • Ensure more reliable and high-performing SAR K9s for disaster response across Europe

CONTEXT & MOTIVATION

SAR K9s are crucial first responders in disasters, particularly in the critical first 72 hours following events such as earthquakes. However, the current selection and training processes for SAR K9s often lack precision, leading to inefficiencies and lower success rates. Smart K9 (K9HERO) seeks to address this gap by optimizing both genetic selection and training processes to produce more resilient, efficient, and reliable dogs that can significantly improve search and rescue outcomes.
